Inside Justin Bieber’s troublesome ‘14
2014 is unlikely to go down as a high point in Justin Bieber‘s career.
While the 20-year-old’s place as one of the world’s biggest pop stars — and highest-earning entertainers under 30 — is secure, it’s hard to look at the year as anything other than a PR disaster. Nary a week went by without Bieber making headlines for another slip-up that put him at odds with the police or a fellow celebrity. But despite his inability to avoid trouble, the “Baby” singer exits 2014 much the way he entered it, with a little less cash and now on probation.
Let’s take a look at some of the trouble Bieber got into in 2014:
January
As if to remind everyone he was still a teen at the turn of the year, Bieber kicked off 2014 by egging his neighbor’s house. A week later, the pop star’s mansion was raided by police, who left with drugs and buddy Lil Za in cuffs. Then the singer got popped for DUI, when he was pulled over drag racing in Miami. Did he let that get him down, though? Nope! He hopped on top of an SUV while leaving the police station so he could wave at his adoring fans. But the month wasn’t over yet — with a day left, Bieber’s private jet was searched by the feds after it touched down in New Jersey on the way to the Super Bowl reeking of pot.
February
Reports said there was so much weed being smoked on the singer’s Super Bowl plane, the pilots had to don gas masks for the flight. Also, details — like that the singer hit speeds of 100 mph before he was pulled over! — and video footage from Bieber’s DUI arrest were released by authorities. Finally, to cap things off, members of the singer’s entourage were arrested for stealing a photographer’s camera in Georgia.
March
Less than a week after the singer’s 20th birthday, Bieber delivered an unbelievably petulant performance during a videotaped deposition. After the video leaks, it was revealed that Bieber thought the whole thing was a plot to humiliate him. He also blamed his stumble-filled sobriety test from January on a broken foot.
April
Weeks after former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell trashed him, Bieber crashed the aspiring musician’s album release party to show him who’s No. 1. Days later, the White House declined to comment on a petition calling for the singer’s deportation. Then, before the month was out, the pop star infuriated Chinese media after visiting a war shrine in Japan, without fully comprehending its significance.
May
It was revealed that when the singer met Rob Ford, he asked Toronto’s disgraced former mayor if he brought “any crack to smoke.” LAPD also investigated claims that the singer stole a fan’s phone.
June
A video surfaced of a then-17-year-old Bieber telling a racist joke, followed days later by the release of another video of the singer using the N-word when he was younger. The singer dealt with the controversy by getting baptized in a New York church.
July
Bieber pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor vandalism charge from January’s egging incident and was forced to pay $80,900 in damages and serve two years’ probation. But rather than calming down after finally facing consequences, he instead got in a shoving match with Orlando Bloom after making a rude comment about the actor’s ex, Miranda Kerr, in Ibiza.
August
Another month, another plea deal. The pop star agreed to plead to two lesser charges related to his drag racing arrest in Miami — misdemeanor careless driving and resisting an arrest without violence. His punishment: having to take an anger management course and make a $50,000 charitable donation. That’s not the end of Bieber’s legal trouble. In the coming weeks, he and a bodyguard were sued for assault by a photographer, he was forced to pay $10K for abandoning his pet monkey in Germany, and his posse was investigated for trying to bribe border officials in Canada. There was still time left in the month for police to investigate another claim that Bieber tried to steal someone’s phone.
September
Bieber kicked off the month by getting arrested for crashing his ATV into a minivan in Perth County, Ontario, Canada. Then, days later, after getting booed at a Fashion Rocks charity event, the singer stripped down to his underwear for no apparent reason. Before the month was out, he found time to throw a punch at a photographer in Paris, too.
October
Surprisingly, Bieber stayed out of trouble for the most part, but raised eyebrows when he went to a Knicks game with the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
November
An Argentinian judge demanded that Bieber return to the country to face questioning about an alleged attack on a photographer he ordered while on tour last year or face jail. Judge Fucando Cubas went as far as to ask Interpol to use “necessary means” to get the pop star into the country.
December
Bieber closed out 2014 on an another embarrassing note: His attempts to get a woman’s phone number failed miserably after she felt he looked too much like Ellen DeGeneres.
