Kanye West says he’s running for president in 2020
What was that?
In a free-wheeling acceptance speech as varied and unpredictable as his own recording career, Kanye West stole the show at the VMAs on Sunday night.
Accepting the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, the award show’s career achievement honor, the 37-year-old covered everything from what it’s like to be a walking contradiction to the most infamous moment of his career, and announced (facetiously, one would assume) his plan to run for president in 2020 — all while saying the word “bro” repeatedly.
West was presented the award by none other than Taylor Swift, the same person he interrupted on stage at the VMAs in 2009, a moment West hasn’t been able to escape in the years since.
“I met Kanye West six years ago at this show, actually,” Swift said. “Since then we’ve had a lot of time to talk about a lot of things.”
After running down the “Yeezus” rapper’s many accomplishments, Swift made clear there was no bad blood between the two, concluding, “I’m really happy for you and Imma’ let you finish, but Kanye West has had one of the greatest careers of all time. I am honored to present the 2015 Vanguard Award to my friend, Kanye West.”
The two hugged it out on stage, before Swift stepped away, taking West’s spot next to his wife, Kim Kardashian.
“Taylor Swift, thank you for being so gracious and giving me this award this evening,” West said before setting off on one of the most epic acceptance speeches anyone in the crowd or at home is sure to have ever been privy to.
“I fight for artists, but by doing that, I was disrespectful to artists,” West said of the incident. “I didn’t know how to say the right thing, the perfect thing.”
On a night when feuds were in the air, West addressed the media’s interest in perpetuating squabbles between artists and celebrities.
“Sometimes I feel like all this they run about beef and all that sometimes I feel like I died for the artists’ opinion for the artist to be able to have an option after they were successful,” he said. “I’m not no politican, bro.”
West also gave MTV a hard time for repeatedly bringing up his incident with Swift in the years since and even in the run-up to the night’s award show.
“You know how many times MTV ran that footage again, because it got them more ratings? You know how many times they announced Taylor was gonna give me that award, because it got them more ratings? Listen to the kids, bro!” he said as the audience booed.
As hard as it may have been to follow the rapper at times through the speech, one thing that was never in doubt was where West’s passion is.
“I will die for the art, for what I believe in,” he stated without the slightest bit of uncertainty.
But West also had some fun before all was said and done, announcing ambitions beyond the world of pop music.
“I have decided in 2020 to run for president,” he said with a smile before bounding off the stage.
