Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama split after six years together
In the third high-profile celebrity split this week, Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama have called it quits after six years together.
Demi shared the sad news on her Instagram account on Friday night, just days after Calvin Harris and Taylor Swift and Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik also split up.
The statement read: “After almost six loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship.
“This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more that anything that we are better as best friends.
“We will always be supportive for one another.
“Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years.
-With only love, Wilmer & Demi.”
Demi, 23, hadn’t shared a picture of them together since around Valentine’s Day.
Speaking about their relationship on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show last year, she said she was “immediately attracted to him” when she first met him.
Demi admitted Wilmer, 36, was initially wary of the 13-year age gap between them.
She said: “I’m not shy about dating older men and he was like, ‘woah slow down, you’re too young.'”
While many questioned their relationship due to the age gap, Demi credits Wilmer with helping her get through multiple trips to rehab for an eating disorder and drug addiction.
Speaking to Fitness magazine last year, she said he played a critical role in helping her to love herself and stay healthy.
She said: “It’s been difficult.
“I almost went back to rehab for my eating disorder last summer.
“I was obsessing over food and terrified of it at the same time. Wilmer noticed and called me out on it, which was a relief.”
Earlier this year, Wilmer gushed over his other half, telling “Entertainment Tonight”: “You know, we’ve been best friends for about six years.
“We haven’t necessarily been dating for six years, but we have six years of friendship, and it’s been … it’s been beautiful.”
“All I did was love her exactly when she needed me to love her. And you know, we just stay honest. That’s it.”
The topic of marriage had come up in recent interviews and Demi told a New Zealand radio station: “I am very, very in love with him. I think — we will probably wait a little bit longer, but — if he asked tomorrow I would say yes.”
Meanwhile, the split comes at a tough time for Demi whose great grandmother, who she calls Mimaw, died last week.
She attended her funeral on Friday and shared a picture of them together on Instagram with a heartbreaking post.
She wrote: “This morning I lost my world and the world’s most special woman. I miss her more than words can even describe.
“The pain I feel is almost unbearable but because of her strength I will power through it.
“The love and support I have received has been empowering and so special to me..I love all of you so much and I am forever grateful for the prayers, texts and fan art my Lovatics have made me. Thank you.”
