Why Kim had no security the night she was robbed
A source close to Kim Kardashian told Page Six she pleaded for her life when held at gunpoint — then was bound and gagged — but she managed to free herself from the shackles and raise the alarm after the robbers left with her $4 million ring.
The source said of her ordeal, “This was a life-and-death situation. They broke in when she was in bed, and put a gun to her head. She had to plead and beg for her life, telling them she was a mother, telling them about her kids.
“They held her at gunpoint and searched her room. They didn’t physically assault her. They bound and shackled her and put tape on her mouth to gag her, but she was not locked in the bathroom.
“They took jewelry — at least one ring — and at least one phone. But what they took isn’t important, this was a terrifying incident and they could have killed her. She thought she was going to die.
“When they left, Kim was able to break out of the shackles from her hands and then pull off the tape on her mouth. She then raised the alarm and other people in the hotel came to her aid.
“She is very, very shaken, but is physically okay, and has returned home to the US. Thankfully her children were in New York at the time.
“She has given a statement to Paris police and they are investigating. They are looking at security footage. The place she was staying in is a boutique hotel where she and Kanye have previously stayed. A lot of celebrities stay there. She was in bed for the night and thought she was safe.
“Now everything has to change as far as her security goes. Her security has and will continue to be dramatically stepped up.”
Of some suggestions on social media that this is all a publicity stunt for the show, the source said, “That is absurd and offensive. There were no cameras for the Kardashian show shooting in Paris. This was a terrifying incident, Paris just isn’t a safe place at the moment.”
A rep for Kardashian declined to comment on the record and referred to the previous statement made on Sunday night.
A friend told Page Six more about the incident, saying the thieves targeted her and her jewelry — in particular the $4 million ring Kanye recently gave her. They got into her room by holding a gun to the concierge’s head and demanding he walk them up to her room.
The friend said, “The concierge had a gun to his head. She was aware the second they came in [that it was a robbery]. As soon as they came in, there were five guys, they were surveying the area looking for her. She could tell that they were looking for her.
“She was confused because it was the middle of the night, but she knew it wasn’t an accident. They put a gun to her head. At that point they started taking jewelry. I don’t know exactly what they took first, but they started collecting all of the things from the room that were of value, which would be all the jewelry.
“They looked for anything of value that was small that they could take; so jewelry and watches. But jewelry really was their main thing. But it was clear that they were looking really for that big ring [the $4 million one that Kanye just gave her].”
The friend added that her jewelry was not in a safe. “She had a person with a gun to her head the whole time. They didn’t bind her hands until the very end until they’d cased everything,” they said. “But they didn’t bind and gag her until the end, just in case they possibly needed her. She was not put into the bathtub until the very end.”
While it’s unclear whether it was an inside job, the friend said they were confident police would find whoever is responsible for the crime.
“We really don’t know, but I will say the French authorities have been doing everything they can,” they said. “They’ve been very thorough during the initial investigation; they were very professional. They did their due diligence and all the proper protocols and Kim felt like they were very invested in figuring out who did this.
“They’re going to reserve comment [on who did it], certainly to Kim, until they start running out who it could be and pulling the footage. But the one thing that is clear is that it was the concierge who walked these assailants up to her suite.
“They did not speak English. They were French-speaking.”
Understandably, the reality star feels shaken following the incident, having felt like there was a serious chance that she could die.
“She’s traumatized. She assumed she was going to die. From the minute they walked in, she assumed they were going to take her life. She had a gun on her head the entire time. And another person had a gun on the other guy. She pleaded for her life. She begged. She kept talking about her kids.”
On Sunday, as had been the case previously, Kim had felt that there was no need for extra security while staying in the apartment — something that will obviously now have to change.
The friend said, “She did not. It sounds crazy, but understand she’s in her own home, in an apartment with only one entry point which is coded with two keys and keypad. If a guard was there, what would have happened differently. Her guard doesn’t carry a gun. They had five guns; most likely more.”
Despite the scary incident, the reality star has not lost faith in her bodyguard, Pascal Duvier.
“No. Kim 100 percent does not blame Pascal,” the friend said. “Kim put Pascal with Kourtney that night. When she’s home, she doesn’t feel the need to have a security guard outside her door at all times. In Bel Air they have a 24-hour, four-person security detail. Plus state-of-the-art motion sensors and security cameras. So when she’s in her primary residence, she’s got everything; when she’s in New York, she’s got more. But when she’s in Paris, there’s five family members. There’s Kendall, Kourtney, Kris; they’re all doing different things. There’s more people for security to be covering. Kim was in for the night; she was not doing anything.”
Today Kim spent the day in her apartment with her close friends Jonathon Cheban, Simon Huck and La La Anthony.
