Harvey Weinstein booted from the Academy
Harvey Weinstein‘s Academy membership has been revoked.
“The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Board of Governors…has voted well in excess of the required two-thirds majority to immediately expel him from the academy,” the prestigious group said in a statement released to Page Six. “We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over.”
The 54-member group held an emergency meeting on Saturday in the wake of countless accusations of sexual misconduct against the movie mogul.
Since the damaging news has continued to unfold, Weinstein, 65, has been fired from his company and has headed to Arizona for rehab. Earlier this week, his wife of 10 years, Georgina Chapman, revealed that she’s leaving him.
Weinstein isn’t the first to be expelled of the prestigious group. In 2004 “Godfather” actor Carmen Caridi, was kicked out for sharing screeners of films.
In a previous statement, the Academy deemed Weinstein’s behavior as “repugnant, abhorrent, and antithetical to the high standards of the Academy and the creative community it represents.”
Roman Polanski remains a member of the Academy, despite his pleading guilty to drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl.
Bill Cosby, too, maintains his membership despite well more than a dozen women coming forward to accuse him of drugging them and committing sexual assaults.
The drawbridge, though, has now finally gone up on “sexual predator behavior.”
The ouster vote was cast “to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over,” the statement said.
“What’s at issue here is a deeply troubling problem that has no place in our society.”

“The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors met today to discuss the allegations against Harvey Weinstein, and has voted well in excess of the required two-thirds majority to immediately expel him from the Academy. We do so not simply to separate ourselves from someone who does not merit the respect of his colleagues but also to send a message that the era of willful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behavior and workplace harassment in our industry is over. What’s at issue here is a deeply troubling problem that has no place in our society. The Board continues to work to establish ethical standards of conduct that all Academy members will be expected to exemplify.”
