Woody Allen says he never felt bad for Harvey Weinstein

Woody Allen has clarified his comments about Harvey Weinstein, claiming he meant to say the disgraced movie mogul is a “sad, sick man,” according to a report.

“When I said I felt sad for Harvey Weinstein I thought it was clear the meaning was because he is a sad, sick man,” Allen told Variety in a statement.

“I was surprised it was treated differently. Lest there be any ambiguity, this statement clarifies my intention and feelings,” he added.

On Saturday, Allen told the BBC that “the whole Harvey Weinstein thing is very sad for everybody involved.”

“Tragic for the poor women that were involved, sad for Harvey that his life is so messed up,” he said. “There’s no winners in that. It’s just very, very sad and tragic for those poor women that had to go through that.”

He added that he hoped the revelations about the pervy producer would improve the situation — but warned against a “witch hunt.”

“You don’t want it to lead to a witch-hunt atmosphere, a Salem atmosphere, where every guy in an office who winks at a woman is suddenly having to call a lawyer to defend himself. That’s not right either,” the filmmaker said.

“But sure, you hope that something like this could be transformed into a benefit for people rather than just a sad or tragic situation.”

The director’s comments to the BBC were widely condemned on social media, with Rose McGowan, who has accused Weinstein of raping her, describing Allen as a “vile little worm.”

Allen, who worked with Weinstein on a few films, said he had never heard any of the allegations of sexual assault and harassment.

“No one ever came to me or told me horror stories with any real seriousness,” Allen said. “And they wouldn’t, because you are not interested in it. You are interested in making your movie. But you do hear a million fanciful rumors all the time. And some turn out to be true and some — many — are just stories about this actress, or that actor.”

Allen has faced his own sex-abuse allegations, with his adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow accusing him of molesting her when she was 7 years old.

Dylan’s brother Ronan Farrow in 2015 wrote an op-ed for the Hollywood Reporter condemning the media for its handling of the accusations against Allen.

Allen, who was never charged, has always strongly denied the allegations.

Ronan Farrow also penned the scathing New Yorker exposé about Weinstein, having spoken to 13 women who accused the former exec of sexual harassment, assault and rape.

Weinstein’s spokeswoman Sallie Hofmeister said last week that “any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr. Weinstein.”

Weinstein has been fired from his company and was given the boot from The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
