Amal Clooney, Rihanna to host the 2018 Met Gala
The countdown for the 2018 Met Gala has officially begun.
On Wednesday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art revealed “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” will be the theme for the forthcoming gala, which will be hosted by Amal Clooney, Rihanna and Donatella Versace.
“Every show we do at the Costume Institute has that potential,” curator Andrew Bolton told the New York Times of the Costume Institute’s upcoming exhibition. “This one perhaps more than any other. But the focus is on a shared hypothesis about what we call the Catholic imagination and the way it has engaged artists and designers and shaped their approach to creativity, as opposed to any kind of theology or sociology. Beauty has often been a bridge between believers and unbelievers.”
The Versace-sponsored exhibit opens May 10 and will feature about 50 papal pieces on loan from the Vatican, as well as an additional 150 designer items said to be inspired by Catholic imagery. It is slated to be the largest show to date, with New York’s Roman Catholic archbishop, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, expected to receive a coveted invite.
Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams co-chaired this year’s fashion fete, which focused on Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo and the “Art of the In-Between.”
The annual Met Gala will take place Monday, May 7.
