Prince Harry is engaged to Meghan Markle
It’s official!
Britain’s Prince Harry has proposed to American gal pal Meghan Markle and the couple will tie the knot in the spring of 2018, Clarence House announced Monday.
“His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince Harry to Ms. Meghan Markle,” the royal residence said in a statement.
The 33-year-old prince — who has long been one of Britain’s most eligible bachelors — and his 36-year-old fiancée will appear at Kensington Palace on Monday afternoon to record a TV broadcast to air in the evening.
The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh said they were “delighted” with the news and wish the couple “every happiness,” according to the Telegraph.
Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, said: “We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.”
Markle’s parents wished their daughter and the prince “a lifetime of happiness.”
“We are incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry,” they said, according to the outlet. “Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person. To see her union with Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy for us as parents.”
The pair became engaged in London earlier this month after a whirlwind 16-month romance, Clarence House revealed.
“Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty the Queen and other close members of his family. Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms. Markle’s parents,” the statement said.
The couple will live together in Harry’s current home, Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.
Markle is expected to become a duchess — just like Middleton did when she became the Duchess of Cambridge after saying her vows in 2011.
The actress will likely become HRH the Duchess of Sussex — if Harry is made the Duke of Sussex by the Queen on the morning of his wedding.
But unlike Kate, Markle is unlikely to be a future queen because Harry is too far down the line of succession — fifth in line to the throne — to have a realistic chance of being monarch.
Prime Minister Theresa May also sent her “warmest congratulations to HRH Prince Harry and Meghan Markle upon their engagement.”
“This is a time of huge celebration for two people in love and, on behalf of myself, the Government and the country, I wish them great happiness for the future.”
The fairytale wedding will likely be officiated by Justin Welby, the archbishop of Canterbury, who said he was delighted by the news and had been impressed by Harry’s “immense love for his family,” according to the Guardian newspaper.
Reports surfaced early last fall that the royal had fallen for Markle after a May 2016 encounter in Toronto, where he was promoting the Invictus Games for disabled service members.
Walking hand in hand, the couple watched wheelchair tennis together in front of the world’s media. Markle had also made an appearance at the Games’ opening ceremony, where she sat apart from Harry.
Harry addressed his fledgling relationship with Markle in a statement in November 2016, amid the ongoing media scrutiny the couple experienced.
In May 2017, the pair were photographed embracing at a polo match in Ascot, with Markle spending time with new pals, including Mark Dyer, a former army officer often described as Harry’s mentor.
Later that month, Markle attended the wedding reception of the Duchess of Cambridge’s sister, Pippa Middleton, who married James Matthews.
During the summer, Harry whisked Markle to Botswana and Zambia for a romantic holiday, with reported outings on safari and to Victoria Falls.
Markle, who is best known for her role as Rachel Zane in the TV drama “Suits,” opened up about the royal romance in a September interview with Vanity Fair.
“We’re two people who are really happy and in love,” she told the magazine. “We were very quietly dating for about six months before it became news, and I was working during that whole time, and the only thing that changed was people’s perception.
“Nothing about me changed. I’m still the same person that I am, and I’ve never defined myself by my relationship.”
Markle has spoken of her heritage as a source of pride.
“My dad is Caucasian and my mom is African-American,” she has said, the Guardian reported. “To say who I am, to share where I’m from, to voice my pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman.”
She has already begun the transformation to a new life, shutting down her lifestyle blog and rumored to be leaving “Suits” at the end of next season, the Telegraph reported.
Markle has been married before, to Trevor Engelson, but the couple split up after just two years.
