2017: The year in Mariah

Mariah Carey’s life was such a rollercoaster in 2017 that it could have served as a sequel to her “Fantasy” video. From her New Year’s not-quite-rockin’ Eve to breakups, make-ups and management shakeups, take a look back at Mimi’s biggest moments of 2017.

1. January
Mariah Carey on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" 2017 FilmMagic Mimi’s performance on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” was widely regarded as a disaster after audio issues exposed the singer’s backing track. Carey and show host Ryan Seacrest’s team played the blame game for weeks.
“You know her inner ears were NOT working and your entire production team did not set her up to win,” Carey’s then-manager, Stella Bulochnikov, wrote to show producer Mark Shimmel in an email. “MARIAH KEPT TELLING THEM [something was wrong] ON STAGE IN REAL TIME … THEY KEPT IGNORING HER. SHE TOOK A HIT HONORING HER COMMITMENT TO YOU. I SHOULD HAVE PULLED HER OFF THE STAGE THIS IS SABOTAGE.”
Dick Clark Productions denied the claims as “defamatory and outrageous,” and some said it was Carey’s fault the performance fell flat. “It was totally [Carey’s] screw-up . . . Her assistant came out for the sound check, not her,” a source told Page Six.
Carey fired her longtime creative director, then took a break from the spotlight following the incident. “I cannot deny that my feelings were hurt,” she said, “but I’m working through this and I’m truly grateful for my fans and my true friends who have been so supportive during this time.”

2. February
https://www.instagram.com/p/BQCNm9SDe_H/Carey had a whirlwind February. She sweated out her stress at the gym in stilettos and gave a final F-U to ex-fiancé James Packer with her music video for “I Don’t,” in which she torched her $250,000 wedding dress.

Unfortunately, it would be her Lambs’ last time to see her live for months, as her tour with Lionel Richie was postponed as he recovered from knee surgery.
Carey also voiced Mayor McCaskill in the hit “Lego Batman Movie,” which hit theaters on Feb. 10.
The diva’s personal life hit a high note, as she celebrated Valentine’s Day with beau Bryan Tanaka in a hot tub — and posed solo in a bathtub full of Hershey’s Kisses.

3. March
Mariah Carey, Monroe Cannon, Moroccan Scott Cannon and Nick Cannon WireImage Carey had a relatively quiet March, though she did have somewhat of a reason to celebrate: Her beloved twins with ex-husband Nick Cannon, Dem Babies Moroccan and Monroe Cannon, met their new half-brother, Golden. Golden’s mother is Cannon’s ex-girlfriend Brittany Bell.

4. April

Her personal life, however, hit a snag: Carey and her boyfriend of five months, Bryan Tanaka, broke up, reportedly because Carey grew tired of being a sugar mama to the backup dancer — and because he was apparently jealous of her amicable relationship with Nick Cannon.
“Most men are jealous of me,” a smug Cannon cracked at the time. “I’m joking. But I know nothing about [their breakup]. For me, at the end of the day, she’s an amazing mother and we focus on our kids … That’s always my dream girl. Like, to me, just because we’re not intimate, I’m closer with her than probably I’ve ever been just based off of that’s my family, that’s the mother of my children.”
Still, Cannon assured fans that he and his dream girl hadn’t actually reunited.

5. May
In May, Carey’s camp reportedly was so desperate to keep the “Heartbreaker” singer from reuniting with Bryan Tanaka that they confiscated her phone and locked him out of her property. It didn’t work: The couple reunited over a cozy dinner and have been together ever since.

6. June
Carey endured quit a bit of verbal lashings in June. Will Ferrell hinted that her cameo was cut from “The House” due to her alleged diva demands, and co-star Cedric Yarbrough slammed her in a Facebook rant as “unprofessional & borderline abusive to our director, who tried his best to appease her every wish.”
Mimi got the last laugh, though, as “The House” was a critical and commercial flop.
Dot Stein, a masseuse known for biting clients, also blasted Carey, lamenting, “It’s a huge production to massage her. She doesn’t want anyone touching her bedsheets. She refuses to lie on a massage table … God forbid my saliva would have touched her; she would have erupted. So I didn’t bite Mariah.”
Mariah Carey and James Packer in January 2016WireImage Carey never bothered responding to any of the gossip and was equally dismissive in late June, when she was questioned about her billionaire ex James Packer’s relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as a dinner they’d all attended together.
Carey clapped back with her signature shade, “I was eating the food. They had some food there that was pretty good, I don’t know … I was just there because I was invited to a dinner … There was conversation, food, dinner.” When pressed, she replied, “Please, darling, please! I don’t [know] where the motherf—ker is. How am I supposed to know? I don’t know, for real … I don’t know, he’s somewhere doing something, whatever. I have no idea. I really have no idea about the political stuff that goes on. I don’t pay attention to it.”
Mimi closed out the month with a touching tribute to Manchester bombing victim and lifelong Lamb Martyn Hett at his funeral.

7. July
In July 2017, Carey took Bryan Tanaka and Dem Babies swimming with “gentle nurse sharks,” flaunting her curves in a skintight, low-cut wet-suit … because she can. The singer also showed a lot of skin during her final performance at her Las Vegas residency.
The same month, it was announced that a Starz series based on Carey’s life was in development by her longtime pal Brett Ratner. The series would take place in the Big Apple in 1986 and chronicle the rise of a biracial 16-year-old siren “who survived a difficult childhood to become the biggest selling female music artist of all time.” Sound familiar?
Also in July, Carey’s dance moves — or lack thereof — went viral. Anthony Burrell, the creative director and choreographer she booted after the New Year’s Eve debacle, later explained to Complex, “It’s just typical Mariah. Mariah is clear: when she doesn’t wanna do something, she doesn’t do it. She’s performing with lackluster and no f—ks given, and it’s taking away her star.”

8. August
Carey made some pretty surprising and heartwrenching revelations in August.
“I just feel like I am a regular human being and I deserve the same respect as anybody else,” she told Page Six ahead of her performance at Madison Square Garden on Aug. 19. “I have always had low self-esteem, and people do not recognize that … I can’t measure what type of respect I deserve — I really can’t.” She added, “Growing up different, being biracial, having the whole thing where I did not know if I fit in . . . That is why music became such a big part of my life, because it helped me overcome those issues.”
Carey told us that she’s even wary of those close to her because of her childhood.
“Sometimes it is hard to let your guard down,” she admitted. “I do think to myself, ‘Did they mean this? Or do they not really mean it?’ And that is with everybody — it is not just with three people or just one.”
Still, that doesn’t mean Mimi doesn’t know how to have a good time. On Aug. 20, she celebrated a day off from her tour with a pajama party with girlfriends in the Big Apple.

9. September
Mariah Carey and Ryan Seacrest at "New Year's Rockin' Eve" Getty Images for dcp In September, VH1 paid tribute to Carey’s rap collaborations at VH1’s Hip Hop Honors. The same month, Page Six learned that Carey will celebrate the 20th anniversary of her hit album “Butterfly” with a tour and VH1 docuseries. The behind-the-scenes look at Carey’s tour would likely pick up somewhat where her canceled E! series, “Mariah’s World,” left off.
Later that month, a nonprofit choir, Broadway Inspirational Voices, sued Carey for $67,500 over a botched contract for her 2016 Christmas residency at the Beacon Theatre. Court documents obtained by Page Six alleged that Carey’s camp failed to pay a $4,000 deposit to the group before canceling on them completely.
Just days later, Ryan Seacrest dished on Carey’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” debacle again.
“What was going through my head [in that moment] was and is: That crew, that team, that staff is the best in the business,” Seacrest said. “They put on the biggest live music events and they know what they’re doing, and I know how good they are at their jobs. So my reaction was, she was working with the best — I find it hard to believe they made big mistakes that night.”
Still, Seacrest admitted he wasn’t fully aware of what was going down in real time.

10. October
October was a bit rough for Carey.
On Oct. 2, Carey appeared via satellite on “Good Morning Britain” — just hours after the Las Vegas massacre. An oblivious Carey was taken aback when host Piers Morgan asked her about the deadliest mass shooting in American history, and critics slammed “GMB” for not postponing her appearance in light of the tragedy. Carey, who was booked on the breakfast show to promote her “All I Want for Christmas” tour, was woefully out of place as she lounged in front of a Christmas tree while Morgan showed her footage of the shooting.
“That’s awful. I pray for the victims,” a stunned Carey said. “I hope all this can stop.”
Weeks later, it was revealed that burglars stole $50,000 worth of accessories from Carey’s Los Angeles home, including designer sunglasses and purses. Thankfully, the “Breakdown” singer wasn’t home at the time of the theft.
At the end of the month, Carey stunned in a sparkly black number at a birthday party for Karl Lagerfeld, where she insisted on only being photographed from her right side — which is nothing new for the singer, who has openly preferred that as her “good side” since she was 19. Still, don’t think that means Carey’s a diva — earlier in October, Westlife singer and Carey collaborator Mark Feehily insisted she’s actually quite down to Earth.

11. November
Mariah Carey FilmMagic The multi-octave diva began November with several high notes: She was honored with a hand and footprint ceremony at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles, was nominated for the Songwriters Hall of Fame and dumped manager Stella Bulochnikov, who led her to “Mariah’s World.”
Shortly after her split from the failed comedian-turned-reality TV producer-turned manager Bulochnikov, a source told Page Six that Carey underwent weight loss surgery after being body-shamed for her curves. Carey’s rep didn’t respond to requests for comment on the alleged procedure, though it should be noted that the diva’s weight has fluctuated for years — she shed 70 pounds after the birth of her twins in 2011.
The same week, one of Carey’s former bodyguards sued her for sexual harassment and unpaid wages, and sources claimed that Carey’s beau Bryan Tanaka had taken over day-to-day management duties.
“Bryan is behind the whole split between Mariah and Stella,” a source told Page Six. “Bryan believes that he should be the one running Mariah’s day-to-day life, and he’s been orchestrating Stella’s exit for a long time. No one enjoys working with Stella. There’s no secret that some people are happy she’s out of the picture.” Another source said, “This is a full-on Britney-and-Kevin Federline situation. Brian is a backup dancer, and knows nothing about managing an iconic artist.”
However, later that month, it was revealed that Carey had actually signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation management.
“[Mariah’s] cleaning house,” a source told us. “She is getting legitimate people, assistants, a lawyer, and Stella is not happy about it.”
In late November, the Queen of Christmas fell ill and was forced to cancel several of the opening dates of her “All I Want for Christmas” tour.

12. December
Carey’s reign as the Queen of Christmas continued with a series of sold-out performances at the Big Apple’s Beacon Theatre, as well as across the Pond and in a week-long Las Vegas residency.
Even more festive, her holiday classic, “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” broke the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time since its 1994 release, landing at No. 9 the week of Dec. 19.
“This is such an amazing Christmas gift! As a songwriter, I feel so honored to have this song reach Billboard’s [Hot 100] top 10 for the first time,” Carey told Billboard. “I honestly never thought we’d be talking about this happening, but I’m so thankful to everyone who embraces this song as part of their holiday tradition. It truly warms my heart, and I am proud of this song that I wrote basically as a kid on my little Casio keyboard.” She was also awarded PETA’s Angel for Animals Award for her animated feature and children’s book based on the song.
To end 2017 on a truly high note (as is her specialty), it was announced on Dec. 23 that Mimi will return to the “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” stage at 11:45 p.m. for a “redemptive” performance. Here’s hoping 2018 starts off right.
