Demi Lovato celebrates six years of sobriety
Demi Lovato is celebrating six years of sobriety.
“So grateful for another year of joy, health and happiness,” Lovato, 25, tweeted Thursday. “It IS possible.”
Her road to sobriety was not easy. In a documentary about her life, the singer revealed that while promoting a “sober lifestyle” in 2012, she was still using drugs.
“I wasn’t working my program, I wasn’t ready to get sober,” she said in “Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated.” “I was sneaking [cocaine] on planes, I was sneaking it in bathrooms, sneaking it throughout the night … I went on a bender of like, two months where I was using daily.”
She’s since put in the work to maintain a drug- and alcohol-free lifestyle, turning to programs like Alcoholics Anonymous.
In a recent Billboard interview, the “Sorry Not Sorry” singer shared how she nearly relapsed in 2016 while attending the Met Gala.
“I had a terrible experience,” she explained. “This one celebrity was a complete bitch and was miserable to be around. It was very cliquey. I remember being so uncomfortable that I wanted to drink.”
Instead, she left early and attended a nearby Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
“I changed my clothes, but I still had my diamonds on — millions of dollars of diamonds on in an AA meeting,” she said. “And I related more to the homeless people in that meeting who struggled with the same struggles that I deal with than the people at the Met Gala — fake and sucking the fashion industry’s d–k.”
