Super-long hair extensions like Kim’s will cost you $6K
From Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner to Jennifer Lopez and Nicki Minaj, lots of stars are experimenting with super-long extensions. But a word of warning for those tempted to try the trend: Down-to-there “Cher hair” will cost you, big time.
According to L’Oréal Paris hair pro Kellon Deryck, who works with stars like Cardi B and Missy Elliott, a full lace wig is your best bet if you’re looking for added volume along with length — and most will set you back four figures.
“The cost of a hair unit ranges from $700 to $2,500, depending on the quality and color,” Deryck told Page Six. Clients can also achieve a similar look using four or five individual “bundles” of extensions, which cost about $240 each.
Then there’s the installation process, which “can range between $200 and $3,500, depending on the experience of the stylist,” Deryck explained. It can take anywhere from 45 minutes to four hours to install the extensions via sewing or bonding, and the stylist also recommends a half-hour consultation beforehand to assess the client’s hair condition.
Those seeking Rapunzel-worthy locks might be able to save some money by choosing clip-in extensions instead, priced at “around $600 for about 18 to 24 inches — although anything longer will cost you much more,” according to Kérastase celebrity hairstylist Jennifer Yepez, who added major length to Gigi Hadid and Salma Hayek‘s ponytails at this year’s Met Gala. As a bonus, she added, “it only takes about 20 minutes to clip them in.”
Either way, super-long hair requires serious upkeep. Deryck recommended sleeping in a super-size satin bonnet to protect the hair and prevent tangling, along with L’Oréal Paris Magic Root Cover Up to help blend the extensions with a client’s own hair. And Yepez stressed the importance of using a heat-protecting product like Kérastase L’incroyable Blowdry Lotion before flat-ironing or blowing out extensions for a sleek, glossy look.
