Demi Lovato hints at past sexual abuse

After receiving backlash for a prank that may or may not have involved sexual assault, Demi Lovato revealed that she suffered sexual abuse in the past.

During a Twitter Q&A with fans over the weekend, a Lovatic asked the singer about the best prank she ever pulled.

“I hired a lady of the night in Vegas and sent her to [Lovato’s bodyguard] Max’s hotel room to surprise him,” Lovato, 25, replied in a since-deleted tweet. “She walked into his room without permission and grabbed him in his ‘area’ and he freaked the f—k out hahahaha.”

Followers quickly swarmed on Lovato, alleging that she’d trivialized sexual assault with the stunt, which didn’t sit well with the former Disney star.

“For all of those coming at me rn, listen to the lyrics of ‘Warrior’ and maybe you’ll have more compassion for someone who made a simple mistake,” she tweeted. “Of all people I know about sexual abuse. You don’t have to educate me.”

In “Warrior,” Lovato hints at an incident from her childhood, but doesn’t go into specifics, singing, “There’s a part of me I can’t get back / A little girl grew up too fast / All it took was once / I’ll never be the same.”

She told Cosmopolitan in 2013 of the track, “My family knows what it’s about. When I’m ready to open up that subject with the outside world, then I’ll be free to talk about it. But right now, it’s kind of one of those things where the lyrics speak for me. It’s all in the song.”

Lovato, who’s been open about her struggles with addiction, eating disorders and cutting, previously claimed that her late father was “abusive,” telling “Dr. Phil” in March, “The very first time I was suicidal was when I was 7 and I had this fascination with death. I have experienced things that I have not talked about and don’t know if I ever will talk about.”

Still, she hinted last week that she may open the floodgates about her past.

“I’ll share my truth soon,” she tweeted, adding, “Some of you may not like or understand my truth but it’s me. Take it or leave it.”
