Demi Lovato had to ‘fight every single day’ to stay sober

Demi Lovato struggled with her sobriety for years leading up to her relapse and drug overdose, despite becoming the poster child for recovery at a young age.

“Demi never wanted to be a role model. Her sobriety over the last six years was a fight every single day,” a source close to the singer told People. “After she finally got clean, her team was very hard on her and treated her like she was a kid. It’s so hard to have all these eyes on you all the time.”

The 25-year-old singer’s troubles are the result of not just her bipolar disorder and self-proclaimed “Daddy Issues” — her father was an addict and allegedly abusive — but also from working in Hollywood from a young age and being the breadwinner for her mother, Dianna De La Garza, and her family, the source said.

“She needs to get out of this whole system that she’s been in since she was 13,” the insider urged. “Demi never had a day off. Her mother is a very sweet person who has zero say. Even at 16, one day Demi’s like, ‘I’m paying the bills of this house. This is my house.’ Dianna loves her daughter and wants her to get better. But if she wants to survive, she needs to get out of this business. Right now her health and her life are at stake.”

Lovato was found unconscious in her bed last Tuesday after allegedly partying with friends for 12 straight hours.

Her assistant called 911, requesting that EMTs refrain from using sirens on their way to Lovato’s Hollywood Hills home.

It’s unclear when Lovato will enter rehab, as she’s still being treated for complications related to her overdose, including a high fever and nausea.

Her symptoms are consistent with those of opioid withdrawals, which can be caused by the Narcan that was administered to her at her home before being transported to the hospital.

The “Confident” singer allegedly rejected an intervention after revealing her relapse to those closest to her.

Lovato also cut ties with her sobriety coach and CAST Centers partner Mike Bayer and longtime manager, Phil McIntyre, both of whom staged an intervention for her in 2012.

Sources claimed Lovato believed she could drink in moderation without escalating to harder drug use, to no avail.

“She is so young and she also has a very rebellious personality,” the source said. “She wasn’t drinking or using at first, but she’s even said herself that she can’t be in a [party] environment. She thought she could handle it, but it’s a very slippery slope.”

A rep for Lovato did not immediately return a request for comment on her condition.
