Kardashian-approved clear shoes are a ‘serious risk,’ doctor says
The Kardashians and Jenners seem to live in clear plastic heels, but their see-through Yeezys aren’t exactly the best choice for your feet.
“You are putting your feet at serious risk by essentially wrapping them in non-breathable plastic,” NYC-based podiatrist to the stars Dr. Suzanne Levine told Page Six of the transparent shoe trend.
“Without any aeration, the moist environment can exacerbate pre-existing fungal conditions or bacterial infections, in addition to increasing your risk for blisters.”
Cloaking your toes in PVC can also lead to a supremely stinky situation. “The non-breathable material leads to hyperhidrosis [excessive sweating] and bromhidrosis [excessive odor] — in other words, ‘smelly feet!'” Levine said.
And then there’s the fact that see-through heels don’t leave much to the imagination. “There is no hiding corns and calluses, bunions, hammertoes or the pedicure you forgot to get in these shoes,” Levine pointed out.
Still, there’s no denying that plastic shoes are everywhere this summer. From the aforementioned pumps, sandals and boots produced by Kanye West‘s Yeezy label (and beloved by his famous family) to the versions on offer at Steve Madden and Zara, stylish options abound at a wide range of price points.
“I would not recommend them as a daily shoe, but being a real ‘shoe-aholic’ myself, I could see how the trend is tempting,” Levine admitted.
If you simply can’t resist the allure of shrink-wrapped feet, she said, “wear them when the sun goes down, only for a few hours at a time and start off with the shorter pairs. I don’t recommend diving straight into the full boot!”
And don’t forget to sweat-proof your pair to prevent a fogged-up faux pas — or worse, dangerous slippage. “I would wear them with some sort of drying agent, [like] antiperspirant or spray powder,” the doctor added.
