Lady Gaga, Harry Styles and Serena Williams to host the 2019 Met Gala

The “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute hasn’t yet closed, but there’s already a new Met Gala theme to look forward to.

On Tuesday, the New York Times reported that the theme for next May’s event will be “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” a play on Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on ‘Camp.'” Sontag’s work launched the term — referring to a love of exaggeration and a combination of high art and pop culture — into the mainstream.

Chosen to host the Anna Wintour-helmed event are three icons famous for pushing fashion boundaries: Lady Gaga, Harry Styles and Serena Williams. Last year’s hosts, Amal Clooney and Rihanna, both made headlines with their choice of attire for the big night.

“We are going through an extreme camp moment, and it felt very relevant to the cultural conversation to look at what is often dismissed as empty frivolity but can be actually a very sophisticated and powerful political tool, especially for marginalized cultures,” Andrew Bolton, the curator in charge of the Costume Institute, told the publication.

“Whether it’s pop camp, queer camp, high camp or political camp — Trump is a very camp figure — I think it’s very timely,” Bolton added.

There will be nearly 175 pieces in the show, including men’s and women’s clothing, sculpture, paintings and drawings. Gucci will underwrite the 2019 fête — fitting, considering that Styles is the luxury label’s current campaign star.
