Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson tried to keep their breakup under wraps
Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson broke up at least a week ago, sources told Page Six. But the pair then kept the split under wraps by posting cozy pics on social media.
News that the singer and the “SNL” comic pulled the plug on their engagement broke on Sunday — but sources told us there was buzz that they’d broken up the weekend before.
“There was word they’d broken up,” said an insider. But at the time, “they were Instagramming [Stories] together in bed, and she was backstage at ‘SNL.’”
https://www.instagram.com/p/BosrmxqBE_v/TMZ reported that the couple were spotted at “SNL” over the weekend together hugging and kissing — though the relationship had been on the rocks.
The source said that it was unclear exactly when the two ended things. In hindsight, there seemed to be warning signs. He recently covered up a Grande-inspired neck tattoo — but a source told Page Six last week the “SNL” star had it transformed to match a tattoo the pop singer had inked on her body.
Meantime, things could get awkward for the couple as sources told Page Six that Grande could appear on an upcoming “SNL” episode.
She canceled as the musical guest for the show’s recent season premiere and was replaced by Kanye West.
Insiders told Page Six that Grande is meant to reschedule the appearance, but another source close to the show said that its lineup for guests is still being set.
“SNL” guru Lorne Michaels revealed in a report last month: “We had Ariana drop out for emotional reasons … then Kanye [West] stepped up, and he’ll be there.”
Another source told Page Six that the tragic death of Grande’s ex, rapper Mac Miller, threw the pop star for a major loop.
“She was definitely in love with Mac and his death hit her really hard.”
She’d also canceled other public appearances after Miller’s death.
Davidson, 24, and Grande, 25, first started dating in May and got engaged just three weeks later when he proposed with a $93,000 pear-shaped ring in June.
Reps for Grande, Davidson and “SNL” have not commented.
