Kim Kardashian’s makeup artist’s cheap trick for ‘expensive’ skin
Ever wonder what your favorite celebrities buy when they’re browsing their favorite boutique or shopping online late at night? Welcome to Six Picks, where we ask stars to spill their style and beauty must-haves — so you can shop like you’re famous, too.
Anyone who keeps up with the Kardashians is likely already familiar with Mario Dedivanovic (aka @MakeupByMario), Kim’s longtime makeup artist and the so-called “king of contour.”
But while red carpet-ready glamour may be Dedivanovic’s calling card, the beauty guru — whose client list also includes Chrissy Teigen, Priyanka Chopra and Ariana Grande — is the first to acknowledge that many of his favorite products can be found at your local drugstore. “I get really excited when I find something great while I’m wandering those aisles,” he recently told Page Six Style. “Everybody loves a bargain!”
Below, Dedivanovic breaks down six of the makeup must-haves he always keeps on hand, including the surprisingly cheap staple he uses to give his clients an “expensive glow.”
-
1. Surratt Relevée Lash Curler
“An eyelash curler is essential; it’s one of the most important things in makeup application that I find most people don’t do. Which is kind of crazy to me, because curling your lashes makes such a massive difference! It makes your eyes look more open, more awake. I just can’t imagine doing makeup without it, and yet so many women I know don’t do it.”

2. Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder
“I’ve been using this for years. It’s an iconic product that just sets makeup beautifully. You can use a little bit for a more natural finish, or go a little heavier without it looking too heavy. It helps your makeup last for a really long time.”

3. No7 Match Made Foundation Drops
“My Master Class students know that I’m the mix master. I like to blend, and rarely ever use just one shade of foundation. Most people are not just one skin tone! These drops help you create a custom foundation color; you can mix it with your existing foundation to change the shade depending on what time of year it is and how tan you are, or mix it with moisturizer to give you just a little bit of coverage. It’s just a genius product.”

4. L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black
“This has been my ‘ride or die’ since I began doing makeup almost 20 years ago. I do use a lot of different mascaras, but I always go back to this one. It gives you the perfect shade of black, lifts and separates the lashes and gives a nice amount of volume.”
$5.89

5. Philosophy Purity Made Simple One-Step Facial Cleanser
“I love a cleanser that really takes everything off, but the problem is that those tend to make my skin feel like sandpaper. That doesn’t happen with this cleanser, yet it removes everything really amazingly like a foamy cleanser would. I also use it as a brush cleanser.”
$24
-
6. Vaseline Petroleum Jelly
“When I want to create that inner glow — I call it the ‘expensive glow’ — I use lip balm or Vaseline and I pat it right along the cheekbones, which gives you the most alluring, gorgeous glow. It’s a cheap trick that creates expensive skin!”
