Kim Kardashian says Kanye West has reaccepted his bipolar diagnosis
Kim Kardashian is setting the record straight on her husband’s mental health issues.
Last summer, Kanye West revealed he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, but a few months later while meeting with President Donald Trump, West backtracked and said he was merely suffering from sleep deprivation. In a candid new interview with Vogue, Kim said her husband is bipolar after getting “conflicting assessments” from various doctors.
“I think we’re in a pretty good place with it now,” she told Vogue, adding that West is passionate about showing the world people can live normal lives with mental illness. “It is an emotional process, for sure. Right now everything is really calm. But we can definitely feel episodes coming, and we know how to handle them.”
Kim shared that Kanye won’t medicate to treat his disorder because of how it inhibits his creativity, so they’ve learned to adapt.
“For him, being on medication is not really an option, because it just changes who he is. Traveling a lot does set it off, so he doesn’t travel as much as he used to,” Kim shared. “But honestly, I never want to speak for him, because I am not in his mind. But I think some of the hurtful things that I read online … What is she doing? She’s not stopping him. … Like it’s my fault if he does or says something that they don’t agree with? That’s my husband. I share every opinion that I have and let him know when I think something’s wrong.
“Or if it comes to him being in the middle of a bipolar episode, I’ll do everything to be supportive and help to calm the situation.”
Though West has been at the center of many political controversies—wearing the unmistakable red MAGA hat and meeting with Trump regularly— Kim maintained that he doesn’t actually affiliate with any political party.
“He doesn’t represent either side. But he doesn’t want to be told what he should be. It can be confusing. I get it,” she shared. “The one thing that I respect so much is that he is who he is, no matter what anyone tries to tell him to do. I can be sitting there crying: ‘OH, MY GOD! TAKE OFF THE RED HAT!’ Because he really is the sweetest person with the biggest heart.”
After a while, the “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star gave up on fighting West’s decisions because it was taking a toll on their marriage.
“I stopped caring, though. Because I used to care so much,” she admitted. “I was making it such an issue in our relationship. And in my life. It gave me so much anxiety.”
Kim has since learned to find a politically motivated passion of her own: the law. The beauty mogul-reality star is officially studying law with a goal to take the California Bar Exam in 2022. She’s found two mentor lawyers, Jessica Jackson and Erin Haney, to help her study as part of her four-year partnership with a San Francisco law firm.
“I had to think long and hard about this,” she shared with the magazine, noting how she felt after “seeing a really good result” with Alice Marie Johnson, the prisoner she helped get released. “The White House called me to advise to help change the system of clemency, and I’m sitting in the Roosevelt Room with, like, a judge who had sentenced criminals and a lot of really powerful people and I just sat there, like,’Oh, s–t. I need to know more.’ … But I had attorneys with me who could back that up with all the facts of the case.
“It’s never one person who gets things done; it’s always a collective of people, and I’ve always known my role, but I just felt like I wanted to be able to fight for people who have paid their dues to society. I just felt like the system could be so different, and I wanted to fight to fix it, and if I knew more, I could do more.”
Although Kim doesn’t have a college degree, four states, including California, allow people to take the bar by “reading the law,” or apprenticing with a lawyer or judge, as Kim is doing.
“First year of law school,” Kim explained, “you have to cover three subjects: criminal law, torts and contracts. To me, torts is the most confusing, contracts the most boring and crim law I can do in my sleep. Took my first test, I got a 100. Super easy for me. The reading is what really gets me. It’s so time-consuming. The concepts I grasp in two seconds.”
