The celeb-loved accessory that’s on every red carpet
Commando has mastered the art of being both everywhere and nowhere at once.
The brand — which began with a focus on shapewear and underthings and has since expanded to include ready-to-wear — appeared on more than 30 runways last February, including those of Proenza Schouler, Rodarte, Self Portrait and Tibi, and was worn by celebs on innumerable red carpets during awards show season.
Not that you would have noticed, though. The genius of Commando, and the reason it’s beloved by so many designers, is that its well-built basics are designed to help other garments shine, thanks to the company’s exacting standards for exceptional fit and a commitment to using only the best luxury technical fabrics.
“From the very beginning, Commando has been a close partner to stylists who have relied on our product to complete their looks,” the brand’s founder Kerry O’Brien told Page Six Style. “It used to be that they just called in underwear, but as our line has expanded, the stylists have really come with us.”
And so have the stars, whether it’s Bella Hadid pairing the label’s bike shorts with a blazer in Paris or Kylie Jenner posing for her annual calendar in the brand’s faux leather bodysuit.
While Commando’s signature underwear styles were always a staple in the kits of top Hollywood stylists, O’Brien added that “something changed when Rihanna wore a gorgeous (and completely sheer) gown to the [2014] CFDA Awards with the Commando classic thong underneath to accept the Style Icon award.”
And the brand faced yet another game-changing moment when Serena Williams was photographed by Annie Leibovitz for the August 2017 cover of Vanity Fair wearing nothing but a Commando thong she had brought from home.
“She is one of the best athletes in the world, being photographed by one of the best photographers in the world. She happened to be pregnant, and she felt comfortable and confident enough to appear in our underwear. That sort of confidence and power is really what Commando is all about,” O’Brien explained.
“We are seeing a sea change in the way women approach dressing, and Commando is very much on the forefront of that,” the CFDA member continued. “Women are looking for garments that are made from exceptional fabrics with beautiful fits and impeccable styling. It’s not really about throwaway styles anymore — it’s about investing in clothing that will last, and that’s comfortable and beautiful.”
