Selena Gomez blasts social media as ‘terrible’ for her generation

Selena Gomez blasted social media as “terrible for my generation” during an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival — and urged young people to unplug for a while if they’re feeling overwhelmed.

The 26-year-old singer and actress — who boasts more than 150 million followers on Instagram and about 57.6 million on Twitter — made the comments during a press conference for “The Dead Don’t Die,” a new zombie comedy in which she plays the leading role.

“For my generation specifically, social media has been terrible,” Gomez said, according to a report in the Guardian. “I understand that it’s amazing to use as a platform but it does scare me when you see how exposed these young girls and boys are. I think it’s dangerous for sure.”

She told reporters that it’s “impossible” to make social media safe at this point.

“I’m grateful I have a platform,” Gomez added. “I don’t do a lot of pointless pictures. For me, I like to be intentional with it. I see these young girls … I’ll meet them at meet-and-greets, and they’re just devastated by bullying and not having a voice.”

“I would be careful and allow yourself some time limits of when you should use it,” the songstress added.

“The Dead Don’t Die” — directed by Jim Jarmusch and also starring Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Chloë Sevigny and Adam Driver — follows the happenings in so-called Centreville USA, which is overcome by zombies after “polar fracking” tilts the planet off its axis.

Jarmusch also spoke to reporters about his concerns over climate change.

“Watching nature decline at unprecedented rates is terrifying and concerning,” he said, according to the Guardian. “And what concerns me is a failure to address a threat to all living species. That disturbs me.”
