Your first look at Rihanna’s new high-fashion line, Fenty
Almost more anticipated than a new album from Rihanna is the debut of her new high-fashion clothing line.
The pop star, 31, will release her luxury Fenty collection in partnership with LVMH later this month — and it will not disappoint fans.
Speaking with T magazine, Rihanna explained her vision for the company and how she’s breaking all the rules of the fashion industry, and gave a first look at some of the clothes, which naturally were inspired by her own wardrobe.
“I use myself as the muse. It’s sweatpants with pearls, or a masculine denim jacket with a corset,” Rihanna told the publication. “I feel like we live in a world where people are embracing every bit of who they are. Look at Jaden Smith, Childish Gambino. They dare you to tell them not to.”
The collection will include structured silhouettes, strong shoulders, corsetry and daring accessories. Much like her own Savage x Fenty lingerie line, Rihanna’s Fenty collection will be released in direct-to-consumer online sales drops every few weeks. There will be no fashion show, according to the star.
In keeping with her commitment to inclusivity, the clothing will go up to a French size 46, the equivalent of an American size 14. “I’m thick and curvy right now,” Rihanna said, “and so if I can’t wear my own stuff then, I mean, that’s not gonna work, right?”
According to Jahleel Weaver, a stylist for Rihanna who is now Fenty’s style director, the mission of the brand “is to really speak to how multifaceted today’s woman is. We’re thinking about each release as a different facet to a woman’s wardrobe and how she approaches dressing. Luxury has been defined in the past as one woman, one brand: You know who the Saint Laurent woman is, you understood who the Céline woman was when it was Phoebe. Which is fine, but you think about how that relates to the modern woman. I don’t think she is just one thing, Rih being the perfect example of that.”
Prices range from $1,100 for a suit jacket or cotton canvas dress to $670 for embossed calfskin heels. An oversize Japanese denim jacket will also cost $1,100, as does a suit jacket with a built-in fanny pack, while the matching pleated suit trousers will retail for $485. A brass ear cuff will be set at $420, while the oversized shield sunglasses Rihanna herself has been sporting all over the world will retail for $460.
Rumors that Rihanna would be starting a high-fashion line had been swirling since January, but Fenty’s launch was only officially confirmed earlier this month. It marks the first fashion brand LVMH has launched since Christian Lacroix was founded in 1987, and Rihanna is the first black woman to run a major luxury fashion house.
“I never just wanted to put my name on something and sell my license,” she said. “I’m very hands-on, so I wanted to take it slowly and gain respect as a designer.”
