Kim Kardashian renames shapewear line Skims after Kimono backlash
Kimono no more.
After facing intense criticism and accusations of cultural appropriations for naming her shapewear line Kimono, Kim Kardashian has decided to go in a different direction, announcing on Monday that she’s renamed the brand Skims.
In a series of tweets, the 38-year-old reality star wrote, “My fans and followers are a huge inspiration to me – I’m always listening to their feedback and opinions, and am so grateful they shared their ideas for a new brand name. After much thought and consideration, I’m excited to announce the launch of SKIMS Solutionwear™.”
The pieces are being released on Sept. 10 and come in sizes ranging from XXS to 5XL.
“SKIMS Solutionwear™ is for every body,” Kardashian wrote.
The mobile mogul first announced this forthcoming expansion of her business empire in late June and the internet was quick to point out the insensitivity of the line’s name. “My culture is not your underwear,” once critic tweeted, while another added, “Basically, what you’re doing is creating a line of underwear and calling them ‘traditional Japanese garments.'”
One week after the brand’s debut, the “Selfish” author told fans she was planning on changing the offending name.
