Queen Elizabeth’s dressmaker reveals the royal loves a bargain

Apparently, even a monarch isn’t immune to a good deal.
Queen Elizabeth‘s royal dressmaker Angela Kelly reveals in her new book, “The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, The Dresser and the Wardrobe,” that while the 93-year-old royal may regularly be decked out in priceless jewels, she’s really a penny pincher at heart.
In a book preview published by Hello! magazine, Kelly — who has worked for HM for 25 years — explains that she regularly checks out the “bargain basket” when looking for fabric for the Queen’s next ensemble.
She also relays an anecdote about almost missing a flight because she was claiming tax back on fabric she purchased for the monarch in Singapore.
“I shouted over the plane’s engine a phrase I’m sure the Queen does not hear very often, ‘I’ve got your tax back!,'” Kelly writes, adding, “The look on the Queen’s face was priceless as I handed her the tax refund.”
Kelly also has an unconventional task on her plate: breaking in all of the Queen’s footwear.
“As has been reported a lot in the press, a flunky wears in Her Majesty’s shoes to ensure that they are comfortable and that she is always good to go,” Kelly writes. “And yes, I am that flunky. The Queen has very little time to herself and not time to wear in her own shoes, and as we share the same shoe size it makes the most sense this way.”
