Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles plan generous Megxit deal: report
The monarchy appeared to be bowing to their rebellious young royals Saturday — with Prince Charles and Queen Elizabeth seeking a Megxit deal that will keep Prince Harry and Meghan Markle close.
Prince Charles is focused on protecting his son as he leads the charge to tamp down the crisis, which erupted Wednesday when the couple announced a step back from royal duties.
“At the very heart of the matter is the Prince of Wales’ concern for his son, his daughter-in-law and his new grandson,” a royal insider told the Daily Mirror.
“He is absolutely clear in his mind that Harry is at a tipping point and has promised him he would do everything in his power to help him,” the Mirror source said, an apparent reference to the mental health issues Harry has said he struggles with, stemming from his mother Princess Diana’s death.
Markle also reportedly shares a close bond with Charles, who walked her down the aisle at the couple’s May 2018 nuptials. The Prince of Wales views the progressive pair as one of the monarchy’s “greatest assets” in its bid to modernize the institution.
“There’s a genuine fear from Charles that this could be the beginning of the end for Harry and Meghan’s involvement with the family and that, in his words would be ‘an utter tragedy,'” a senior palace source told the Mirror.
“Charles has implored everyone to work together to bring them back into the fold before it is too late, as he realizes the benefits they have as a couple and indeed for the popularity of the monarchy across the world.”
Despite being “hurt” over the surprise announcement, Charles and Harry’s relationship is “incredibly strong, perhaps better than ever,” senior palace sources told the Mirror, contradicting previous reports that Charles has threatened to yank their funding.
Harry began talks with his father and brother, Prince William, last year about a scaled-back role in the royal family, as he worried it would take a steep toll on his mental health if he continued his regular duties, the Daily Mirror reported.
But the Sussexes were impatient with the slow pace of palace politics — and decided to go rogue.
“Both brothers were until recently, it seemed, in complete agreement with the plan and, despite a falling-out over the last year, committed to making it work for all parties,” a senior palace source told the Daily Mirror.
“But the urgency with which Harry and Meghan have pursued their intentions to break out on their own even more than had been agreed upon has caused great alarm.”
The couple took the advice of external advisers, who urged them to drop the bombshell sooner rather than later, and floated a backup plan for retaining their wealth if things went south, reassuring them that they could continue to cash in on their names, the Mirror reported.
“Harry’s feeling was if they didn’t move then it would be months before they were ‘given permission,'” a Mirror source said. “He has said he felt they had no option but in truth, he believed it would force the family’s hand into them getting their own way.”
The move appears to be working, as royals are reportedly “scrambling” to iron out the “Megxit” details before the Queen’s 72-hour deadline, mandated late Friday following a day of calls and meetings.
