Meghan and Harry reportedly barred from using ‘Sussex Royal’ label going forward

Maybe they can trademark “certified former royal”?

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will be moving forward in their new life without a valuable part of their brand, with the Queen and other senior palace officials reportedly agreeing that the couple will no longer be able to keep the word “royal” as a part of their brand.

According to the Daily Mail, the two had hoped to leverage “Sussex Royal” into not just a new website but a “global trademark for a range of items and activities, including clothing, stationery, books and teaching materials” and a new charitable organization with the name. The pair began using the term in early 2019 after their branch-off from Prince William and Kate Middleton’s household, Kensington Royal.

“As The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are stepping back as senior Members of the Royal Family and will work towards financial independence, use of the word ‘Royal,’ in this context, needed to be reviewed,” a royal source told Page Six. “Discussions are still ongoing.”

As far as the supposed rush to trademark all possible permutations of the Sussex Royal name in advance, the source said, “As part of the process to transition The Duke and Duchess of Sussex into their new chapter, planning has been well underway around the launch of their new nonprofit organization.

“Details will be shared in due course.”
