Meghan and Harry confirm they cannot call themselves ‘royal’ anymore

Meghan and Harry confirm they cannot call themselves ‘royal’ anymore

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have confirmed they won’t be able to call themselves “royal” going forward.

A spokesperson for the couple confirmed Friday that — despite their hopes to leverage “Sussex Royal” into a billion-dollar brand — they will bow to pressure from Queen Elizabeth and Buckingham Palace to drop the fancy title.

Their spokeswoman said in a statement, “While The Duke and Duchess are focused on plans to establish a new non-profit organisation, given the specific UK government rules surrounding use of the word ‘Royal,’ it has been therefore agreed that their non-profit organisation, when it is announced this Spring, will not be named Sussex Royal Foundation.

“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex do not intend to use ‘SussexRoyal’ in any territory post Spring 2020.”

The move means that Harry and Meghan — the Duke and Duchess of Sussex — will have to scrub the name “Sussex Royal” from their Instagram account, where they famously announced their “Megxit” move, and their website, which was rolled out at the same time.

Sources told Page Six that Harry and Meghan had hoped to leverage “Sussex Royal” into a global trademark for all of their endeavors, including books, products, documentaries and their charitable foundation.

The pair began using the term in early 2019 after they broke away from Prince William and Kate Middleton’s household, Kensington Royal.

One source had told Page Six, “As the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are stepping back as senior members of the royal family and will work towards financial independence, use of the word ‘Royal,’ in this context, needed to be reviewed.”

It is believed Harry and Meghan will still use the term “Sussex” for their branding, meaning their foundation could be simply titled The Sussex Foundation.
