How Dwyane Wade and daughter Zaya’s ‘legendary’ red carpet looks came together
Zaya Wade quite literally made her red carpet debut with flying colors.
On Saturday, the 12-year-old daughter of Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union joined her parents for the Better Brothers’ Truth Awards in Los Angeles, with the trio dressed in coordinated suits by designer Richfresh.
Zaya, who recently came out as transgender, sported a bright green tailcoat and silk shirt with black pants that featured a bold fuchsia stripe, while her proud stepmother, 47, and father, 38, matched in black-and-white suits with green and fuchsia accents, respectively.
“They wanted to do something really legendary,” Fresh, who had only three days to design the famous family’s suits, told Page Six Style. “I was putting together concepts and going off a black-and-white motif — something geometric. But when I went to the house to fit Zaya and meet her for the first time, I asked her how she wanted to look, since it was more her moment than her parents’.”
Continued the celebrity tailor, who’s created bespoke suits for Lena Waithe, John Legend and more: “I’ve never had an adult reply the way she replied. She looked up and was like, ‘You know what color I’ve really been feeling? Jade. I’m really having a jade moment.'”
Together, they then settled on fuchsia as an accent shade. “Honestly, it was a collaborative process between Zaya and me on the colors — otherwise it would’ve been all black and white,” Fresh said. “Her input took it to a whole other level.”
It also ensured that Wade and Union’s daughter would stand out on her special evening. “Zaya was the star of the night,” the designer said. “I wanted to make this all about her — since it’s a big moment for her — and to have her parents, whose outfits matched more in terms of concept, play the supportive background role.”
Judging by the outpouring of online praise for the Wades’ coordinated red carpet attire — which several people noted matched the colors of the genderqueer flag — the designer certainly accomplished that aim.
“For her to have entrusted me with such a big, historic moment — Zaya will never have this moment again — I was absolutely honored,” Fresh told us.
