Meghan Markle is cold-calling Americans urging them to vote, Gloria Steinem says
Meghan Markle has been cold-calling Americans to urge them to vote in November, famed feminist Gloria Steinem has revealed.
Steinem said the Duchess of Sussex recently moved to Los Angeles with her royal husband, Britain’s Prince Harry, and their young son, Archie, so she could participate in November’s presidential election — and has been active both in front of and behind the cameras to help elect Democrat Joe Biden and his vice presidential running mate, Kamala Harris.
“[Markle] came home to vote,’’ Steinem told TV’s “Access Hollywood’’ in an online video posted Sunday, noting that the pair have met up at the women’s rights leader’s house.
“And the first thing we did, and why she came to see me, was we sat at the dining room table here, where I am right now, and cold-called voters. And said, ‘Hello, I’m Meg,’ and, ‘Hello, I’m Gloria,’ and, ‘Are you going to vote?’
“That was her initiative,’’ Steinem said.
“She is such an inspiration to me.’’
“Access’’ host Suri Hall laughed and quipped after the Markle voting anecdote, “If [people] weren’t [hitting the polls] before, I bet you they were after that call.’’
In August, Markle told Steinem that she was especially happy about the Democratic ticket because Harris is biracial, as she is.
“I’m so excited to see that kind of representation,’’ Markle, a former TV “Suits’’ star, said in a videotaped chat on the Instagram page of the feminist empowerment group MAKERS Women.
“You know, for me, being biracial, growing up, whether it was a doll or a person in office, you need to see someone who looks like you in some capacity,’’ Markle said.
