Jenna Lyons spent a year on her couch after leaving J. Crew
Jenna Lyons was seriously down in the dumps when she exited J. Crew.
The famed fashion maven — who had toiled with the clothing giant for over two decades before she said goodbye in 2017 — said her legacy didn’t seem to count for much after she was no longer part of the company.
“I remember when I left I was scared and all my friends and co-workers were like, ‘Don’t worry, the phone is going to ring off the hook,’ and it just didn’t,” she told Page Six.
“And then all of a sudden I didn’t have anything on my agenda and no one was calling and no one was getting me lunch and no one was inviting me anywhere and I was like, ‘Whoa,'” Lyons continued. “It felt like the bottom dropped out. I had to really come to terms with the fact that I was not invited to anything because I was Jenna Lyons. I was invited to things because I was the president of J. Crew. It’s actually a good reckoning and a really healthy thing to go through.”
Instead, Lyons said she spent the year flicking through art books while permanently plonked on her couch.
“Now I can look back and say, ‘I was in it, I was really struggling,'” Lyons revealed. “I was just exhausted. I went from having every minute of every day on my calendar packed, so much so that I had a bathroom built next to my office so I could jump in there so a meeting could continue and I could pop back in.”
But that period of reflection forced Lyons to reinvent herself. Part of that change is a reality show on HBO Max that follows the fashionista and her squad as she tackles design projects and fashion makeovers with her new company, Lyons L.A.D. It’s also got a competitive aspect thrown in with a group of eager hopefuls vying for a spot on her design team.
Lyons said the show “actually feels real, as opposed to a lot of other reality shows.”
“They say they’re reality but you can see the drama is constructed and you’re not really getting a behind-the-scenes glimpse and things that go wrong.”
She added that “it’s not scripted” and, “We didn’t have producers telling us what to do.”
“Stylish with Jenna Lyons” premieres on December 3.
