Jamie Spears says he and his daughter, pop star Britney Spears, haven’t spoken in four months as a result of their ongoing conservatorship battle.

Jamie, 68, told CNN he believes their estrangement is by the “Toxic” singer’s attorney’s design and defended his role in controlling her finances.

“I love my daughter and I miss her very much,” he said of 39-year-old Britney. “When a family member needs special care and protection, families need to step up, as I have done for the last 12-plus years, to safeguard, protect and continue to love Britney unconditionally. I have and will continue to provide unwavering love and fierce protection against those with self-serving interests and those who seek to harm her or my family.”

Britney’s attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III, claimed at a hearing last month that the “I’m a Slave 4 U” singer had become “afraid” of her father and wanted him removed from her conservatorship entirely after he had allegedly hired a new manager without consulting her.

Though a judge declined to remove Jamie from his role, she did agree to confirm Bessemer Trust’s role as co-conservator at the singer’s request.

Jamie’s attorney, Vivian Lee Thoreen, claimed that Jamie and Britney’s relationship was fine prior to Ingham’s involvement.

“Jamie’s relationship with Britney is not that different than your average father-daughter relationship insofar as there has always been a mutual love and respect for each other,” she explained.

“Until Britney’s court-appointed attorney Sam Ingham abruptly instructed Jamie not to contact Britney a few months ago, Jamie and Britney had spoken often and regularly throughout the entire conservatorship.  In fact, they had spoken just the day before and had had a pleasant and collaborative conversation.”

Ingham declined to comment on the situation to CNN, citing ongoing litigation.

In a hearing scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 16, a judge will review Jamie’s handling of his daughter’s assets.

The star has been under conservatorship since her infamous mental breakdown in 2007.
