Meghan Markle says her best-selling book depicts ‘another side of masculinity’
Meghan Markle thanked supporters after her new children’s book became a New York Times best seller, saying her story about fathers and sons depicts “another side of masculinity.”
Markle, 39, said she is “encouraged to see that [the book’s] universal themes of love, representation and inclusivity are resonating with communities everywhere.”
“Equally, to depict another side of masculinity — one grounded in connection, emotion, and softness — is to model a world that so many would like to see for their sons and daughters alike,” she said in a message posted to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Archewell website Wednesday. “Thank you for supporting me in this special project.”
Markle’s book, “The Bench,” became No. 1 on the New York Times’ list of best-selling children’s picture books following its release last week.
The story — which the publisher says depicts “the special relationship between father and son, as seen through a mother’s eyes” — was inspired by a Father’s Day poem Markle wrote for husband Prince Harry following the May 2019 birth of their son, Archie.
The tome also features an illustration of the Sussexes’ new baby girl, Lilibet Diana.
“The Bench” currently holds a five-star rating on Amazon with 680 reviews.
This week in the UK, however, “The Bench” failed to make the top 50 list, according to the Daily Mail.
In the days leading up to the release of the book, Markle and Harry, 36, announced baby Lili’s birth. Eighth in line to the throne, Lili joins big brother Archie stateside, as the couple currently reside in California post-Megxit.
