Darren Criss’ brother Charles dead by suicide at 36
Darren Criss’ brother Charles died by suicide at the age of 36 this month, the actor announced in a heartbreaking post to his Instagram on Wednesday.
“Despite our very vocal concerns about his well-being, and his protestations that everything was fine, it’s crushing to say now that Chuck clearly had had a severe depression welling up in him for some time, a depression that was only worsened by a lifelong struggle he had with expressing his feelings – a dangerous combination truly outmatched by his all-too-incredible ability to conceal it,” Darren wrote in his statement, adding, “Not just from the world at large, but most tragically, from the people who were closest to him.”
He continued, “We will never know just how long he was fighting this war within himself, but last week, it consumed him fully, and he succumbed by taking his own life.”
The “Glee” alum, 35, explained that the last several years had been difficult for his brother and that he had “struggled to find stability” during “an unfortunate rough patch.”
He also reflected on how much love his brother had to offer.
“Chuck loved a lot in his life. And love fully. He loved his parents. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He deeply loved his long-term romantic partner,” he said. “But above all, it is important to emphasize just how much he really loved his children … His world revolved around them, and he loved being their father. He shared with them his own joy, good humor and song, and they adored him for it.”
Charles had three children: Rosemary Criss, Dylan Grace Criss and Connor Criss. His youngest was with his current partner and his older two were from a previous marriage.
He also described his brother as “vibrant, special, worldly, hilarious, insightful, gifted, intelligent, celebrated and adored” and stressed that the way his life came to an end should not define who he was.
Darren urged anyone struggling with mental health issues to seek professional help and not feel shame in doing so.
“Allowing oneself to be vulnerable and open about any weakness is in fact an admirable display of strength, and the best first step anyone can take on the road to recovery,” he said.
Darren shared several photos that showed memories with his brother over the years, including when they were just children.
Several of his famous friends flooded the comments section with love and support including Alison Brie, January Jones, Rachel Zegler and Kristin Chenoweth.
Darren and his brother had bonded over their love of music and performed in the band Computer Games together. Charles was also a member of the indie rock band Freelance Whales.
