Makeup artist Pat McGrath travels with 87 suitcases of products — these are the 6 she says everyone needs
Whether she’s glamming up supermodels and stars or making an on-screen cameo in Taylor Swift’s “Bejeweled” video, Pat McGrath has long reigned as beauty-industry royalty.
In addition to creating looks for some of the most-Googled people on the planet, the makeup mastermind recently partnered with Google on augmented reality try-on tech, making it easier to seamlessly select Pat McGrath Labs shades while shopping online.
“They were able to show me 10 different eyeshadows [on myself] in two seconds,” she tells Page Six Style. “That’s amazing. Can you imagine trying on 10 eyeshadows at home? That would take you forever.”
Together, the beauty guru and Google created a New York City pop-up, “The ARt of Beauty,” where shoppers can try out the tech from Oct. 20 to 22. (The experience is currently sold out, but limited walk-in space is available.)
“You can play without caution, have fun and try on shadows that you probably wouldn’t try,” she tells us.
And when it comes to playing with products, “Mother” (as McGrath’s affectionately nicknamed in the industry) knows best; she tells us she gets “nonstop celebrity [product requests] all day, from all of our gorgeous fans.”
“Taylor [Swift] has a full kit of Pat McGrath Labs at home and she can do her own makeup beautifully,” adds the expert, who also worked with Lana Del Rey on her “whole tour.”
Hoping to make your own at-home makeup kit? McGrath’s got you covered. While she famously travels with tons of products in tow — “as a woman who does 87 suitcases, I want to pick 20 [must-haves],” she quips — shop a selection of six of her absolute essentials below.
Mothership I: Subliminal Eyeshadow Palette
For those eyeing red carpet looks from the likes of Taylor Swift and Cardi B, this cult-classic palette is truly the mothership; it combines six of McGrath’s most coveted shades, from statement-making sparkles to silky matte hues.
“Obviously, No. 1 is shadows; everybody wants palettes,” McGrath tells us of the product famous folks request the most.
Skin Fetish: Highlighter + Balm Duo
Want to shimmer like stars — or should we say, “Starships”? McGrath’s must-haves also include this two-in-one glow go-to, which she’s previously used on celebrities like Nicki Minaj.
The “Super Bass” singer is a longtime devotee of the brand, as McGrath tells us, “We just collaborated on her new album cover.”
Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection Blurring Under-Eye Powder
Also among McGrath’s spotlight-ready essentials? This illuminating concealer, made to blur fine lines and provide an incandescent finish.
Divine Skin: Rose 001 The Essence
While time is of the essence for busy multi-hyphenates, they’re not skipping skincare. “A lot [of stars are] asking for the Essence,” the makeup pro tells us of this lightweight emulsion, formulated to nourish, hydrate, and soften skin texture.
Divine Blush: Legendary Glow Colour Balm
The beauty legend’s hero products also include this glossy cream blush stick that can also do double duty as lip color.
Lust: Gloss
Top off any beauty look in sparkling style with McGrath’s go-to gloss, designed for “stained glass window”- level shine.
