Who needs a box of chocolates when you’ve got a candy bra?

Kim Kardashian launched her Skims Valentine’s Day Shop last week, and while the brand’s splashy campaign starring Lana Del Rey may have dominated the headlines, it also marked Skims’ unexpected expansion into edible underwear.

Priced at $34 for the bralette and $24 for the matching panty, these overpriced strings of Smarties sold out in minutes — but fortunately, not before we managed to place an order.

It seems rather obvious that this set is meant for one thing, and it isn‘t street style. But as Kim herself once said, “It doesn’t matter if you have a Valentine or not — just love yourself and be your own.” So I did just that, committing to styling Skims’ candy underthings for a spin around the Big Apple.

As soon as I put the set on, it was clear that the brand’s promise that “one size fits all” missed the mark. For reference, I am 5-foot-1 and a size 2, and the thong was loose and baggy on my petite frame; not exactly what most people are looking for when it comes to barely-there underwear.

Both pieces needed extra knotting to keep them in place — even over my clothes, which was how I chose to style them. And wearing the sugary set on the NYC subway took guts; I don’t recommend it for the faint of heart.

But as the day went on, I got more comfortable in the confection, and even found myself snacking on my bra straps in between errands and while making phone calls and coffee. By the time lunch rolled around, I was wearing (and eating) my candy loud and proud.

Not your usual brunch outfit, but certainly a statement. Julia Remillard
The set ships in a sweet pink gift box that’s perfect for Valentine’s Day — and even includes nutrition facts. Skims

Speaking of which, this is definitely the first lingerie set I’ve worn that comes with nutrition facts; should you manage to munch your way through the entire bra and panty, you’re looking at 1,260 calories and a staggering 288 grams of sugar.

Skims helpfully notes that the top and bottom should each constitute 18 servings — guidance I completely ignored. “Girl dinner,” am I right?

Hopped up on sugar and with night falling, I knew it was time to crank things up a notch. I had plans to go out to eat with friends and then bar-hopping in Murray Hill, so I switched up my outfit, trading my hot pink crop top for a black bralette layered beneath my (at this point half-eaten) Skims one.

I was shocked at how many women recognized my set as Skims. Julia Remillard

While heading to dinner in Times Square, I got looks left and right, which surprised me, seeing as NYC has no lack of shocking sights, including the infamous costumed characters that milled around 42nd Street.

But once I met up with my friends, the compliments started pouring in, even from waiters and complete strangers. I felt fun, flirty and empowered — exactly as I’d imagine Kim Kardashian herself feels 24/7.

Best of all, the fact that I was wearing candy around town meant I had an instant fix for anyone whose energy might be flagging. While out at a bar with my pals, I even offered a few curious folks a taste of my top, with their responses ranging from “Wow, this actually tastes good!” to “Wait … what is this?”

My favorite part of the night, though, was the outpouring of support I got from other women. Several approached me at the bar asking where I got my outfit, and number of others actually recognized the set as Skims.

It seems my style experiment was a smash hit with the other single ladies of New York; after all, who needs a man to have a little fun in edible lingerie?

Overall, I really enjoyed this playful twist on Skims’ usual products. I think the price is a lot to swallow for a single-use look, but if you can get past that, it makes for a pretty sweet style statement.
