‘Game of Thrones’ star Kit Harington reveals he’d call himself a ‘c–t’ in the mirror before getting sober: ‘I’d hate myself’
Kit Harington candidly revealed that being “proud” of his sobriety is one of his greatest “achievements.”
The “Game of Thrones” star opened up about his journey to sobriety, which began when he checked into rehab in 2019, telling GQ Hype that his road to recovery was filled with depression and suicidal thoughts.
“… before getting sober, I would stare in the mirror and call myself a c–t. I’d hate myself. I would literally despise myself and not be proud of anything I’d done,” Harington, 37, said in an interview published Monday, Aug. 12.
“I couldn’t be proud. So the fact that I am proud of getting sober is in and of itself a mark of being an entirely different person.”
The “Industry” actor, who shares two kids with wife Rose Leslie, admitted he was “so lucky” to sober up before welcoming children into their lives because he once thought it would be “physically and emotionally impossible” to cease imbibing.
Looking ahead, Harington admitted he doesn’t know “what the future brings” but he acknowledged the possibility of turning to the bottle again.
“I might have one massive, messy, chaotic relapse, and I hope that doesn’t happen,” he told the publication, “but I think I protect myself by talking about it.”
Page Six broke the news in May 2019 that Harington had checked into luxury Connecticut health retreat Privé-Swiss weeks before his famed HBO series aired its finale.
The British actor underwent psychological coaching at the facility — which costs more than $120,000 per month — where he practiced mindful meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy to combat stress and deal with negative emotions.
Leslie, 37, whom he met on the set of “GoT” and played Jon Snow’s Wildling companion Ygritte, was “extremely supportive,” we were told.
“The end of ‘GoT’ really hit Kit hard…,” a friend of Harington said. “He realized, ‘This is it — this is the end.’ It was something they had all worked so hard on for so many years. He had a moment of, ‘What next?'”
A rep for the “Eternals” actor confirmed at the time, “Kit has decided to utilize this break in his schedule as an opportunity to spend some time at a wellness retreat to work on some personal issues.”
