Tyla denies her Coachella 2025 performance outfit was inspired by Britney Spears: ‘The outfit was fly’
Tyla may be in hot water.
The South African pop star channeled Britney Spears with her Coachella 2025 performance look on Friday night, which was inspired by the “Toxic” singer’s outfit at the MTV VMAs 2001 — or at least, that’s what fans assumed.
The 23-year-old wore a green vintage balconette bra from Dolce & Gabbana’s spring 2001 collection alongside denim cutoffs embellished with beaded fringe and silver safety pins, and the similarities to Spears’ getup for her “I’m a Slave 4 U” performance 24 years ago are uncanny.
Spears famously rocked a pink jewel-adorned cutout green bra and low-rise jean shorts with a butterfly motif and various scarfs along the waist — created by costume designers Kurt and Bart — and added a yellow Burmese phython as an accessory for the legendary performance.
On Sunday, Tyla set the record straight on X (formerly Twitter), denying referencing Spears with her Coachella outfit. “Love her but I just thought the outfit was fly…no inspo,” she wrote.
The comment section is heating up, with many followers refusing to believe it was merely a coincidence.
“Do you not know what inspo means?” one wrote. Another said, “girl you a fraud get out of here”
A third added,”Um it’s literally identical tho??”
“Your stylist was probably inspired but u thought the outfit was cute,” one commented. A second said, “Maybe not you but SOMEONE was inspired!!”
This isn’t the first time Tyla has nodded to an iconic pop star with an archival high-fashion look.
Last November, for the MTV EMAs 2024 in Manchester London, the “Truth or Dare” hitmaker wore a blue version of a 2000 Roberto Cavalli tiger-printed gown that Aaliyah wore to the MTV VMAs the same year it hit the runway.
Intentional or not, we love to see a high-powered reference.
