Jennifer Lopez rates her old red carpet outfits on ‘WWHL’ — and reveals which one was ‘a mess’
Not every red carpet look ages as well as its wearer. Especially when you’re the inimitable Jennifer Lopez.
The pop icon, 56, played fashion critic on “Watch What Happens Live” this Wednesday, rating eight of her most memorable red carpet looks spanning from 1995 to 2007.
In the “Versace or Hibachi” segment — “Versace” meaning keep, “Hibachi” meaning toss to the flames — the superstar gave her stamp of approval to most of her vintage ensembles.
Her 1998 Golden Globes cutout gown? “Versace,” she declared (though she clarified that it was actually Valentino).
Her 1997 Oscars beaded dress by Badgley Mischka got the same treatment (“Yeah, I’m not mad,” she opined), as did her Old Hollywood-style 2007 Met Gala Marchesa gown for the “Poiret: King of Fashion” theme.
Lopez gushed about her look for the 2006 VMAs, which featured thigh-high patent leather boots and a turban-style headwrap that matched her Biba minidress.
“I love it, I’m sorry. I love it,” she said.
When Cohen suggested she could “rock a turban” today, she agreed enthusiastically.
But not every fashion moment made the cut. The “Waiting for Tonight” singer sent her 1995 “Money Train” premiere look straight to the chopping block.
“It was ill-fitting. I’m going to hibachi it,” she said, though she acknowledged it was a “beautiful Richard Tyler” gown.
She also had mixed feelings about the 2000 VH1 Vogue Fashion Awards, where she wore a baby blue romper accessorized with a skinny scarf and a gold statement belt.
“I love the hair,” Lopez said wistfully, before delivering the verdict: “The belt, it was a mess. Let’s hibachi something.”
When Cohen showed her 2001 VMAs look — an off-the-shoulder leopard-print mini worn with thigh-high boots and a floppy hat— the “Watch What Happens Live” audience erupted in applause.
“I had to go with the people,” Lopez laughed, giving it her approval as the crowd cheered.
Her harshest critique was about her 1996 appearance at the Nosotros Golden Eagle Awards, which saw a then-27-year-old Lopez in a white maxi skirt and matching crop top covered up with a dove gray shrug.
“Hibachi!!” she exclaimed when she saw the photo.
The appearance comes as Lopez gears up for her “Up All Night: Live in Las Vegas” residency at Caesars Palace, kicking off Dec. 30. She is currently on a whirlwind press tour to promote her new film, the musical drama “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”
