Levi’s invented blue jeans in 1873 — and more than 150 years later, the denim brand’s still a first choice for many famous folks.

Since expanding beyond its workwear roots in the late 1800s, the iconic company’s blues have popped up on plenty of equally iconic people — from Princess Diana and Marilyn Monroe to modern “It” girls like Hailey Bieber and Kaia Gerber.

“Our rich history as the world’s first jeanswear brand definitely gives us a major advantage in the market, though our fans are one of the key reasons why Levi’s remains relevant around the globe,” says the brand’s global VP of women’s design, Jill Guenza.

“Levi’s have been at the center of culture since the first 501s hit the streets; chosen by tastemakers, rebels, icons, and everyone in between. Our Archives are full of jeans with stories from the people who wore them. We reference these heirlooms constantly when developing new products, blending innovation in fabric, fit, and finish with our heritage for the next generation of fans.”

We asked Guenza to take us through some of the brand’s bestsellers, including those beloved by the likes of Taylor Swift, Kylie Jenner and Gigi Hadid. And unlike many of the jeans stars swear by, you won’t need deep pockets to purchase these popular looks.

From Run-DMC to Marilyn Monroe to Hailey Bieber, a great many famous folks have slipped into 501s over the years. The original version hit the market in the 1890s and later became the world’s bestselling item of clothing, per the Smithsonian Institution.

Selena Gomez, Kristen Stewart, Sydney Sweeney and Kendall Jenner are just a few of the classic cut’s many modern devotees.

“The Levi’s 501 Original is our No. 1 fan favorite, and for good reason: They are iconic (and worn by icons), comfortable, super versatile and work on a wide range of shapes and sizes,” explains Guenza.

This throwback fit is a modern hit; Halsey sported hers onstage in 2022, while Olivia Rodrigo, Lori Harvey and Ashley Benson wear theirs on repeat.

“We [love] the 501 ‘90s, a looser take on the classic straight-leg, button-fly silhouette that’s inspired by our favorite 501s from the 1990s,” says Guenza.

“This fall we are introducing the 501 ‘90s , a slightly cropped version of the 501 ‘90s that’s sure to be a year-round staple; perfect for sandals, ankle boots and chunky sneakers.”

Denim Buyer’s Guide

Style

“Shopping for jeans can be daunting, especially now that so many different styles are trending at the same time,” says Guenza, who adds that prioritizing fit is just as important as selecting the right style for you.

“If you are looking for a pair of baggy jeans, think about how you want to wear them. Do you want them fitted at the waist and then looser through the legs, or do you want them slouchy and hanging off your hips? If you want them more fitted at the top, look for a mid or high-rise baggy with a little bit of stretch and buy them in the same size as your skinny jeans,” she advises.

“If you want them more relaxed and vintage-looking (like our Baggy Dad), then look for baggy jeans with no stretch that have ‘slouchy’ in the fit description. Consider buying these in a size up from the size you normally wear in stretchy jeans.”

Sizing

To ensure a perfect fit (or at least increase your chances of finding one), know your measurements and compare them against the brand’s size chart.

How to Measure

  • Waist and Hip: Measure the fullest part of your hips and the narrowest part of your waist.
  • Inseam: To find your inseam, measure from the top of your inner thigh to your ankle.
  • Rise: To get the best idea of where mid-, low- and high-waisted jeans will sit on you, measure from the crotch seam to where the waistband sits.

Don’t forget to check the fabric type, too.

Stretch denim will contain elastane or spandex, which quite literally allows you more wiggle room size-wise. In contrast, rigid denim (i.e. 100% cotton) will be more stiff, with less give.

It’s also a smart idea to read the customer reviews and check out other shoppers’ photos when you find a style you like. Levi’s website, for example, allows shoppers to upload pictures of themselves in the reviews section. It also offers the option to filter by shoppers’ weight, height and body type, so you’ll have a better idea of how a particular pair of jeans will look on your frame.

Care

Caring properly for your Levi’s (or any denim, for that matter) will help the style last longer and retain its original look. Washing after every wear is not recommended, as it weakens the fiber and fades the color.

“For the most positive impact on both the environment and the longevity of your jeans, we recommend spot cleaning your denim,” says Guenza. “When it’s clear that spot cleaning isn’t sufficient, we recommend turning your jeans inside out and washing them in cold water. Then let them air dry.”

Avoid hanging your jeans in direct sunlight, as this will cause the color to fade. Once your jeans are dry, hang them in a cool, dry space. They can also be folded — but avoid stuffing them into a drawer, which will impact their shape.
