The 19 best ‘Friends’ outfits from Rachel, Monica, Phoebe and more
When it came to wearing memorable outfits, the stars of “Friends” rarely took a break.
On Thursday at midnight, fans of the sitcom were finally treated to the show’s highly anticipated HBO Max reunion special, which brought together all six members of the core cast — Jennifer Aniston, 52, Courteney Cox, 56, Lisa Kudrow, 57, Matt LeBlanc, 53, Matthew Perry, 51, and David Schwimmer, 54 — for a night of unscripted nostalgia.
The star-studded evening also included a “fashion show,” with Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne and Justin Bieber strutting their stuff in the most unforgettable costumes from the show’s 10-season run.
From trendsetting hairstyles to laughable leather, countless episodes of “Friends” could have been dubbed “The One With the Iconic Style.”
Read on to be reunited with some of the series’ most legendary looks.
-
1. Rachel's wedding dress
Runaway bride Rachel Green first graced our television screens in the show’s 1994 pilot, clad in this off-the-shoulder, oh-so-‘90s wedding gown complete with pearl necklaces and a voluminous bow-tied veil.
-
2. Ross' leather pants
There’s perhaps no garment more synonymous with “Friends” than these tight-fitting trousers. At the center of a date gone horribly wrong, Ross’ “paste pants” served as a cautionary tale against sweating in leather. Cindy Crawford even reprised the look during the reunion, giving the style another moment in the spotlight.
-
3. Monica's excruciating boots
After splurging on boots that, well, weren’t made for walking, Monica was determined to justify her pricey purchase to Chandler. It’s safe to say she discovered the true meaning of “beauty is pain” while stumbling around in her high-heeled impulse buy.
-
4. Joey's laughable layers
“Could I be wearing any more clothes?!” Nobody was doin’ layers like Joey Tribbiani, who pranked Chandler by piling on all of his clothes at once and performing lunges — while going commando, no less.
Matt LeBlanc recreated the moment for the reunion — and luxury label Balenciaga even released a $9,000 version of his hilarious look in 2018.
-
5. Phoebe's Santa pants
During her pregnancy, Phoebe made herself at ho-ho-home in a pair of thrift-shop Santa pants, mistaking them for maternity trousers with a “list of baby names” in the pocket.
-
6. Rachel's bridesmaid dress
When it came to Barry’s weddings, Rachel was sometimes a bridesmaid, sometimes a bride. Serving as the former in Barry and Mindy’s wedding, she reluctantly sported a look worthy of Little Bo Peep: a pink flouncy dress complete with a giant matching hat, made even worse by her memorable wardrobe malfunction on the big day.
-
7. Ross' "Frankie Says Relax" T-shirt
Emblazoned with a lyric from British band Frankie Goes to Hollywood, this piece was hardly a relaxed fit. Rachel claimed the band tee as her sleep shirt, sparking a post-breakup fight between the pair.
-
8. Monica's wedding dress(es)
Monica’s bridal style made several pivots that didn’t go unnoticed by “Friends” fans. In “The One with the Cheap Wedding Dress,” she attempted to find her (very expensive) dream dress at a Kleinman’s sale in Brooklyn — and emerged victorious after fighting over the gown with another bride-to-be.
Eagle-eyed Reddit users, however, noticed the two dresses seen in the episode are actually quite different. What’s more, Monica eventually married Chandler wearing neither of the styles, but rather the House of Bianchi gown pictured above. Third time’s the charm?
-
9. Phoebe's strategically placed bow
There’s no use crying over spilled hummus – especially if you have gift-wrapping supplies on hand. After Joey ruined Phoebe’s dress with a dribble of chickpea dip, the free spirit covered up the stain on her pale yellow dress with an elaborate Christmas ribbon.
-
10. Joey's "man bag"
In “The One With Joey’s Bag,” Rachel took a stab at styling her actor pal for an audition, getting him out of his comfort zone with a “sexy” leather tote he wound up loving. Sadly, the accessory cost him the role; “I don’t know if the world is ready for you and your bag,” Rachel later admitted.
-
11. Ross' "Boys Will Be Boys" jacket
During a shopping spree with Rachel, Phoebe had Ross try on a leather jacket that he liked — until he noticed the back, which spelled out “Boys Will Be Boys” in a sparkling font. (“What? They will be!” Phoebe quipped when he protested.)
Coincidentally, the saying was also the title of a ‘80s TV show featuring “Friends” star Matthew Perry.
-
12. "The Rachel" haircut
Jennifer Aniston’s iconic chop, dubbed — what else? — “The Rachel,” rose to fame during the first two seasons of “Friends.” While the actress later called the layered look “the ugliest haircut I’ve ever seen,” that didn’t stop the ‘90s style from making a resurgence in 2020, with celebrities including Chrissy Teigen, Selena Gomez and Bella Hadid all rocking “Rachel”-like cuts.
-
13. All the wedding dresses
In an episode titled, naturally, “The One With All the Wedding Dresses,” Monica couldn’t resist trying on Emily’s gown for her big day with Ross — thus inspiring Rachel and Phoebe to slip into white dresses of their own. The image of the trio lounging on the couch in their bridal attire is downright iconic.
-
14. The Holiday Armadillo
Nothing says Christmas like the Holiday Armadillo, Ross’ answer to the costume shop running out of Santa outfits.
-
15. Rachel's "apartment pants"
While pandemic sweats may have brought new meaning to the words “apartment pants,” the term first entered pop culture when Phoebe and Ross tried to help Rachel’s sister Jill (played by Reese Witherspoon) cover up a shopping spree.
Pretending the purchases were theirs, they called Jill’s “Don’t you want to rent me this apartment?” pants simply “apartment pants” — a concept fashionista Rachel swiftly pitched to her boss, designer Ralph Lauren.
-
16. Monica's Barbados hair
Monica got herself into a hairy situation when the friends visited the humid Caribbean, battling some serious frizz that got progressively worse throughout the episode.
-
17. "Spudnik"
Justin Bieber may get his peaches from Georgia, but he finds his potatoes on the set of “Friends.” The pop star slipped into Ross’ “Spudnik” Halloween costume during the reunion show, complete with the antennae-accented colander headpiece.
And although it’s safe to say “Spudnik” stole the show during the sitcom’s Halloween episode, Monica and Phoebe’s superhero styles are definitely worth an honorable mention.
-
18. Rachel's giant beach hat
Rachel was always one to follow the forecast — the trend forecast, that is. The fashion maven sported a gigantic wide-brimmed hat for a trip to the beach, declaring that “hats are back.” Quipped Phoebe in response: “And this time, they’ve ganged up to form one giant ‘superhat!'”

19. Ross' date-night twinning moment
A match made in … Bloomingdale’s? After accidentally grabbing one of Rachel’s shopping bags, Ross pulled on her pink sweater — and wound up coordinating with his date.
